Everybody loves cute, fuzzy bumblebees, but hornets are insects with a much smaller fan club. Hornet stings can be incredibly painful, and these insects are known for attacking and eating our favorite pollinators—bees! Of course, hornets are also pollinators themselves, and they help with pest control by eating aphids and other unpleasant insects, so extermination of all hornets on sight isn’t necessarily the best choice. However, if you have a hornet problem, like a nest in an inconvenient place or a struggling beehive, it may be time to consider hornet removal.
Find the Nest
Just like bees, hornets aren’t particularly aggressive unless their home is threatened. The first step to avoiding painful hornet stings is staying away from hornets, so if you start seeing them frequently, keep an eye out for a nest. Hornets may build their homes aboveground, in trees, under the edge of your roof, or in your attic, but there are also types that prefer ground nests. These can be particularly difficult to notice and can pose more of a safety risk when you are walking near the area where the nest is located. If you do spot the nest, stay away from it and let one of our professionals know so we can complete the hornet removal for you.
Don’t Kill Hornets
If you see a hornet, you may start to panic, thinking about the risk of being stung. Stay calm and leave it alone as long as you can. Killing a hornet releases pheromones other hornets can smell, causing them to sense danger and leading them to you. This presents a much greater risk of being stung repeatedly, so unless you have no other choice, don’t try to kill hornets on your own.
